Actor-director Clu Gulager’s film credits include The Last Picture
Show (directed by Peter Bogdanovich, starring Cybill Shepherd, Tim Bottoms and Jeff Bridges), The Killers
(directed by Don Siegel, starring Lee Marvin Angie Dickinson and John Cassavetes) and McQ (starring John Wayne).
Gulager has starred in or made appearances in numerous classic television series such as The Virginian, Playhouse 90,
Bonanza, Mod Squad, Kung Fu, Ironside, McCloud, Hawaii Five-O, Quincy,
CHiPs, and Alfred Hitchcock Presents among others. Clu Gulager was born in Holdenville, Oklahoma
to a vaudeville family. It is said that he got his nickname from the clu-clu birds that were nesting near the home
at the time of his birth. Clu Gulager studied acting in the experimental theater of Paris under the guidance of
celebrated avant-garde stage actor, Jean Louis-Barrault (Children of Paradise). Gulager was a contract
player for Universal Studios in the 1960s, was a popular character actor in 1970s television, and followed that
by playing parts in horror films such as The Return of the Living Dead. Gulager’s short film A Day
with the Boys was nominated for the prestigious short film Palm d’or award at 1970’s Cannes Film festival.
Gulager was featured in Piranha 3DD, directed by son, John Gulager. Clu Gulager
currently lives and works in Los Angeles, where he teaches acting.
